Reading, England

Reading is first and foremost a university town and has been ever since the nineteenth century when the University of Reading opened its doors to students. Over 12 thousand students now crowd the university's hallowed halls and have turned the town into a party town quite unlike the rest of Berkshire County's quiet historic streets.

The university crowd agrees: The Purple Turtle is the bar to frequent. Crammed with students in the evening, the bar is open until 2 a.m., long after most other Reading watering holes are shut. Loud bands can often be found deafening the ears of aurally satisfied students. Those students still on a bender can stumble to the Alleycat Live to nightcap until 4 a.m.

Summertime is the time for university students and like-minded locals to kick up their heels at the Reading Rock Festival, an event known far and wide. Americans can equate the Reading weekend-long festival to a Brit Lollapalooza, with the same focus on marketing to youth culture and alternative bands. This year, Rage Against the Machine, Foo Fighters and the Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined the oh-so-hip bill.

Those not interested in following the university crowd may want to try out some of Reading's other attractions, like the Hexagon Theater, known for its world-class opera and symphony seasons, or the Reading Gaol, made famous by Oscar Wilde's Ballad of Reading Gaol and still in use today. Reading is also the home of a first division football club, The Royals, the subject of much frenzied fandom in Reading and the rest of England. Reading also boasts the largest brewery in Europe.
